Final Fantasy XIV: The story so far

Final Fantasy XIV Online was first released on September 30, 2010 and was met with disastrous fans and critics reactions. With the clunky gameplay and interface being some of the worst offenders pointed by the community. This backlash caused Square Enix to postpone the release of the PlayStation 3 version of the game and appoint Naoki Yoshida as the head of the development team. Yoshida made major changes to the game and his team released a new version of the game, called Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This new version of the game launched on August 27, 2013 on Windows and PlayStation 3.

This new version of the game received a better response from the community and critics alike who praised the changes made by the development team. The second version of the game has received three major expansions so far, Heavensward in 2015, Stormblood in 2017 and Shadowbringers in 2019. Consoles players have the possibility to play the game using a keyboard and a mouse while PC players can use a controller. Some features are specific to each platform but in both cases the UI has been simplified to make it more ergonomic.

In terms of setting, the game uses classic Final Fantasy elements such as jobs, limit breaks and even the fan favorite chocobos. The game mainly takes place in the region of Eorzea on planet Hydaelyn during a time of strife. The Endwalker expansion that is set to release later this year, will conclude the Hyadaelyn-Zodiark part of the game’s story. It will add two main jobs to the game the Sage (a healer class) and the Reaper (a DPS class focused on close combat). The Viera race will also receive a male variant while the Hrothgar will have a female. As time goes by, we will update you on this new expansion and the future of the game.
